Schedulous Glossary
Class Utilization Rate
The percentage of available class spots that are actually filled by attending members.
Definition
The percentage of available class spots that are actually filled by attending members.
Why It Matters
Class utilization tells you whether your schedule is working for your members or just for your coaches. A class with 30 spots and 8 attendees is burning resources. A class with 20 spots and 20 attendees might need a second time slot.
Low utilization does not always mean a class should be cut. Sometimes the issue is timing, marketing, or the booking friction in your system. Tracking utilization over time reveals trends: a class that is slowly declining may need a refresh, while a new class with steady growth deserves more promotion.
High utilization across the board is also a signal. When every class is consistently full, members may be struggling to book, which creates frustration and can drive cancellations. The goal is balanced utilization, not maxed-out classes.
Formula
Total Attendees / Total Available Spots x 100
Industry Benchmark
Aim for 70-85% utilization across your schedule. Below 50% suggests the class or time slot needs reevaluation.
